Professor, Monash University and Alfred Health

Anne Holland is Professor of Physiotherapy at Monash University and Alfred Health in Melbourne, Australia. Anne’s research program investigates new models of rehabilitation for people with chronic respiratory disease. Her recent clinical trials have tested novel models of pulmonary rehabilitation to improve access and uptake, including low cost home-based models and telerehabilitation. Ian Adcock graduated from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1987 with a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology. He started working with Professor Peter J Barnes at the National Heart and Lung Institute on the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid action in the lung in 1990. In 2004 he became Professor of Respiratory Cell & Molecular Biology at Imperial College London. Dr Adcock is a former Head of Assembly 5 (Airway Diseases) within the ERS and has served on both the ERS and ATS Programme Committees.

Research interest

My main interests lie in the effects of glucocorticoids on airway inflammation in patients with severe asthma and also in COPD patients. The roles of oxidative stress, infection and epigenetics in modulating steroid responses in in vitro and in vivo have also been a long term research focus. Recent studies have focussed on novel drug interventions and the detection of drug-response signatures in large patient datasets such as that in U-BIOPRED.
An important aspect of the group is to perform translational research. Thus, although many of these studies are performed in immortalised, cultured cell lines we have endeavoured to confirm results in primary human cells obtained from normal, asthmatic and COPD subjects by biopsy, bronchio-alveolar lavage or following extraction from peripheral blood. We also use animal models of chronic airway inflammation as a tool to understanding the inflammatory processes present in inflamed airways.

Dr Adcock has published >500 peer-reviewed articles
Google h-index: 124; Citations: 55,110. WoS H Index =94.

Andrew Synn
Associate Physician, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School

Dr. Andrew Synn is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an attending physician in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, USA. Dr. Synn’s research focuses on the use of quantitative image analysis to non-invasively identify pulmonary vascular abnormalities and improve clinical phenotyping of lung disease. Using data from the Framingham Heart Study and local clinical cohorts, his work has demonstrated that vascular “pruning” on CT imaging is associated with more severe airways disease and associated pulmonary vasculopathy, including greater risk of airflow obstruction, poorer lung function, right ventricular dysfunction, and greater risk of death. He also recently found that pruning on CT is correlated with structural remodeling of the pulmonary vessels on histology. Dr. Synn’s work is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the American Lung Association.

Sanghun Choi
Kyungpook National University

My main research is to perform high-performance computational simulations and to perform population-based lung imaging analysis. The ultimate aim of my research is to develop the efficient intervention via imaging-based clustering, and to understand underlying structural and functional mechanism of lung diseases. I received academic training in both mechanical and biomedical engineering. I graduated from the University

of Iowa with a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering and with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. I also graduated from Seoul National University (in South Korea) with a master’s degree in

mechanical engineering. At the University of Iowa, I explored structural and functional alterations of asthma

populations with novel computational techniques. At Seoul National University, I developed a finite element method for solving two-phase flows with the strong effect of surface tension. I am now a member of ATS RSF from 2012, and a head of machine learning and fluid mechanics laboratory (MLFM) in Kyungpook National University from March 2017.
